The MDM/R

In this section, you will find detailed information about the Meter Data Management and Repository (MDM/R), including its various user interfaces and the types of reports it generates. This section also includes MDM/R design and standards documents as well as updates about its production, quality assurance and sandbox environments.

In Ontario, a single meter data management system provides a common platform for storing, processing and managing all smart meter data. The MDM/R processes meter reads and provides LDCs with hourly billing quantity data that aligns with the three time-of-use (TOU) rates. It also produces detailed reports that allow LDCs to monitor smart meter performance.

The MDM/R is specifically designed to serve Ontario’s unique electricity market as the MDM/R must support interaction with nearly 80 LDCs, which vary in size and resources. Once all 4.6 million smart meters in Ontario have been enrolled in the MDM/R, it will be able to process approximately 110 million meter reads per day – which, on an annual basis, exceeds the number of debit card transactions processed in the country.

The data stored and managed in the MDM/R is secure. Data transferred to and from the MDM/R comply with a stringent industry protocol that describes how to send encrypted data over the Internet securely.  Currently, only LDCs (and their designated agents) have the ability to provide or pull information from the database. In accordance with established service levels, the MDM/R also has a disaster recovery facility at a geographically separate location that will resume all critical MDM/R functions within six hours of a business interruption – and receive and process real-time data within 24 hours.

The MDM/R is also subject to an annual independent audit that is based on a Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants standard. The audit evaluates controls and procedures that govern key MDM/R functions and the changes made to it. It also evaluates the confidentiality of information within the MDM/R.
